Days 11 and 12
Day 11- Pompeii and Sorrento
Today we visited Pompeii, the Roman city both destroyed and preserved by an eruption on Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. We drove through the beautiful countryside to Pompeii and met our local guide who was an "older" gentleman from Naples who reminded me of my Grandfather. He was one of our best guides, very informative and funny. It was a great tour and we did get to see a lot of this city. A very interesting tour and a beautiful sunny warm day in Pompeii. We had some free time to enjoy lunch where we did have very good lasagna this time :).
We then boarded the bus for an hours drive to the beautiful town of Sorrento, which overlooks the Bay of Naples- GORGEOUS! We checked into our hotel Cesare Augusto, which had very large rooms with a balcony overlooking the mountains and a great location, within walking distance to the main Square -Piazza Tasso. We showered and changed and met the group for dinner at a restaurant in Piazza Tasso. We had a 5 course meal and free flowing wine and dinner was very good, but too much food! After dinner, it was a beautiful night so we walked around the Piazza and did some shopping before heading back to the hotel.
Day 12- Sorrento, Amalfi, Capri and Positano
Breakfast at the hotel, not so good.... On the road at 7:45 AM and took a mini bus since the roads were so narrow to the ferry to meet our tour guide who would escort us to Capri. A very nice, sweet and handsome gentleman named Luigi. We all boarded the ferry for a fun ride to the beautiful Isle of Capri. Once arrived in Capri, we had to hop on board another mini bus which took us to the Villa San Michele in Anacapri (Which was the highest point in Capri) and the views were amazing. We had a great tour of the villa and the grounds and then some free time to explore on our own and have lunch. My husband LOVED Capri and wanted to move here. It really is a breathtaking spot! Our guide also took us to the beach, with amazing clear blue water. We had some free time in Capri and we decided to grap lunch on the go, so we got a slice of Sicilian Pizza and Sicilian rice balls. Not as good as the ones I had in Sicily, but tasty enough. Did some photo shooting and shopping and enjoying the views before we had to head back to the ferry and back to Sorrento. It was an incredible visit on Capri.
After arriving back to the hotel around 3:00 PM, we had some free time before we headed on the magnificent Amalfi Coast to Positano. The drive along the Amalfi Coast was beautiful, a perfect evening. We had the mini buses again because of the narrow streets and stopped first at the Madonnia Statue and viewpoint which overlooked the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Ischia. We had time for shopping and exploring in Positano with a walk to the beach and a cappuccino. I liked Positano and Sorrento, but I prefer the other side of the Amalfi Coast. The town of Amalfi and the gorgeous town of Ravello. The views from Ravello were like no where I have ever seen. And I preferred the town of Ravello over Positano, so if you have to chose between the 2 because of time, go to Ravello, you will not be disappointed.
As we headed back to our hotel, it was a beautiful clear evening with wonderful sunsets along the way. Just breathtaking.....We had dinner in Sorrento with a few friends from our tour group and had one of the best dinners we had in Italy so far- delicious!
